Area Information

You won’t have to venture far from The Brook to experience the best of the beautiful Wisconsin north woods.

  • Canoe, Kayak or even tube the legendary Namekagon River – a DNR canoe landing is within minutes of every north woods neighborhood.
  • Spend a day at the beach – two of Sawyer County’s finest sand beaches located on crystal clear waters are less than ten minutes away from The Brook, Seeley Pines and Nordic Ridge.
  • Explore the trails, waterfalls and remote areas of the expansive Chequamegon and Nicolet National Forests. More than 1.5 million acres of recreational land will more than satisfy your spirit of adventure. Whether you are seeking a simple day hike or a primitive overnight camping trip, driving to your entry site can take less than twenty minutes. www.fs.usda.gov/cnnf
  • Fish for world record muskies or a dinner of walleye on one of the area’s abundant Class A fishing lakes. Destination: wherever the fish are biting. Travel time: less than half an hour.
  • Try a more challenging adventure. Late August and all of September is harvest time for the “food that grows on water.” More than 50 wild rice lakes and flowages can provide a different view of the north woods and may even result in a day of bounty. Visit the DNR website to learn the techniques and locations for “ricing.” http://dnr.wi.gov/org/land/wildlife/wildriceharvest.htm
  • Venture north to Gitchegoomie, the Ojibwa name for Lake Superior. 45 miles from The Brook, Bayfield, Wisconsin and the Apostle Islands are two of Wisconsin’s most beautiful destinations and a perfect day trip. When you need to get a little urban lift, visit the bustling port of Duluth and spend a summer day at Canal Park. Cheer the runners during Grandma’s Marathon if you’re not one of them. And at least once brave the winter wind to see the start of the John Beargrease dog sled race. The Twin Ports of Superior, Wisconsin and Duluth, Minnesota are 60 miles from The Brook. You’ll be home in time for dinner.
  • Just chill and enjoy the many festivals and fun activities the Hayward/Cable/Spooner area has to offer.
